Five Elements of a Great FPS Boss Battle


Why do most FPS boss battles suck? Because they don’t take advantage of the following 5 elements.

In my last video I began to answer this question by looking at how Doom 2016’s added mobility and well executed boss battles represented a return to form for the genre. This week on the Noshow we go deeper in examining what FPS games can do improve their boss battles. By focusing on what Doom does right we can learn a lot comparatively about where other games went wrong. Good FPS bosses will have an emphasis on mobility, projectile and melee attacks, they will have well designed boss environments and multistage battles. A good boss is like a final exam.
